Gas decarbonisation: Bright Blue proposes Low Carbon Obligation for suppliers

The government and Ofgem must apply the “same fervour” to decarbonising UK gas as it has done to decarbonising electricity, argues Conservative think tank Bright Blue, in order to meet national targets. In a new report, Pressure in the pipeline: decarbonising the UK’s gas, it proposes measures – including imposing a new ‘Low Carbon Obligation’ on gas suppliers – to kick start the transformation. It calls for new government investment and incentives for decarbonisation to be an urgent priority in Ofgem’s next price control framework for gas, from April 2021.
