Janet Wood looks at how coal will be driven out of the power market

Coal is on its way out in the UK. The government has promised to legislate before the end of 2021 to ensure the UK’s remaining coal-fired power plants (all of which are in England) will be closed by 2025. The aim is to provide certainty for plant bidding into a Capacity Market auction at that time for the 2024/25 delivery year.
