Old coal relies more on carbon price support than capacity cash

Will old coal be phased out around 2023, as policymakers have assumed, or will it still be in operation? Work by Imperial College researchers, on behalf of WWF, suggests that the Capacity Market (CM) has little effect on that outcome. Instead, said report author Rob Gross, “The principal driver is whether carbon price escalation continues as originally planned, or whether we revert back to the ETS standard”.
