The north is the “energy powerhouse of the UK”, Lord Hutton told Northern PowerGrid stakeholders at a recent meeting. It consumes almost a quarter of the UK’s power and it generates half its renewable energy; meanwhile it had already created 28,000 jobs in the low-carbon and renewable energy industries and it could double that.
