Availability: fear of missing out raises fossil’s game as winter wind concern falls

Generators that are not on fixed prices tell New Power that the best value at present is in the short-term market. That’s a result of less dispatchable power on the system, and also the price spikes that Ofgem has encouraged by its move to stop smearing the costs of being “out of balance” across the market. Generators that can respond to calls for more power with an hour’s notice, or even less, can make a very good return. Conversely, those that see a plant breakdown or other interruption and are out of balance have to carry heavy costs. It’s driving investment in flexible plants.
