Drax chief: system cost assessment will show benefits of biomass conversions

Dorothy Thompson says biomass is the cost-effective route to lower carbon

Drax Power is hoping a report on ‘whole system’ costs for different technologies, commissioned by the Department of Energy and Climate Change (Decc), will make the case for converting its second group of three units from coal to biomass fuel. Chief executive Dorothy Thompson said: “We believe there really is a great benefit to the UK to convert all the units. In large renewables we are probably the most cost-effective on a whole-system basis when you look at what it really costs to deliver that renewable power to the end consumer.”
