Business and energy secretary Greg Clark has approved the development consent order (DCO) for a major gas storage project at Holford, north of Middlewich in Cheshire.

The application, by a wholly-owned subsidiary of INEOS Enterprises, will consist of up to 19 underground caverns, gas-processing plant and associated development with the capacity to store up to 500 standard million cubic metres (mcm) of natural gas, with an import and export capability of up to 34 mcm a day.
