IEA finds renewable energy costs are ‘no longer outliers’ as they overlap with fossil fuels

Renewable energy technologies are “no longer outliers” in levelised cost of energy (Lcoe), when the costs of electricity generation options are compared, according to a new report from the International Energy Agency (IEA). “Increasingly it overlaps with fossil fuel costs”, except where gas prices are very low, the Agency said.

The report revealed the importance of choosing the right location for wind and PV, because “annual utilisation has a very powerful effect” on Lcoe.
