Irish peat power generation set to end by 2030

The Republic of Ireland is set to end using peat turf to fuel three power stations within 15 years.

The Republic of Ireland is set to end using peat turf to fuel three power stations within 15 years. The semi-state-owned agency Bord na Móna, which currently owns and manages the country’s extensive peat bogs, has announced plans to transform itself into an alternative energy company, centred on biomass, wind and solar power.
Peat briquettes, a popular winter fuel in many homes, will be replaced by biomass briquettes. The agency will end its current large-scale harvesting of peat for power generation by 2030.
