A Labour government would ban fracking, shadow energy secretary Barry Gardiner announced at the Labour Party conference. He said the technical problems that give rise to “real environmental dangers” in fracking can be overcome, but that fracking “locks us into an energy infrastructure that is based on fossil fuels long after our country needs to have moved to clean energy”. There would be a consultation with industry and the trade unions on how to transition to a low-carbon industry, he said.
