Malcolm Grimston is an advocate of new nuclear power. He says climate change means we have no choice: “for baseload, which is where nuclear lives – the choice is nuclear or gas. We either replace the [existing] 10GW of nuclear with 10GW or more of new nuclear, or with CCGT.” Since the growth of renewables “pretty much mandates an increase in gas” for its flexibility, the cost – in carbon terms – of hugely increasing gas for baseload would be too heavy.
