Offshore wind: the story so far

There has been dramatic progress in tapping wind energy offshore, as turbines approach 10MW and are deployed in bigger arrays further offshore. Sian Crampsie summarises the UK’s development rounds and tracks the projects

 

By early 2017, there were 30 fully operational offshore wind farms in UK waters, with a total combined capacity of 5,353MW.

A further 12 were under construction, or ready to enter construction, with a total combined capacity of about 5,000MW.
