Price spikes, not blackouts, are the danger point this winter

In an exclusive New Power survey, we asked industry experts whether National Grid’s low margin assessment meant we should be ready for emergency measures this winter and next. They said no: the real threats to the industry and its customers are volatile prices and cash calls

There is no energy crisis this winter and we are not particularly at risk from blackouts. That is the strong response from New Power’s panel of energy industry experts in a survey carried out in October. Experts said that the market would respond, not least because new measures about to go into effect would sharpen price signals.
However, they warned that those sharper signals would result in price spikes. That could have dramatic effects on many industry players, possibly driving them into financial distress and raising prices for customers.
