System operator prepares to set out new options on ancillary services procurement

Next week (3 April) National Grid is expected to set out its plans for a new regime for procuring ancillary services as part of a consultation. The industry has a month to let the system operator (SO) know whether the plans to simplify and clarify the charging regime will result in a liquid market, and one that will let new entrants – such as storage – help meet system needs at low cost.

The System Needs and Product Strategy is central to the SO’s plans to rethink procurement of ancillary services.
