If utility investment has been hard pressed in recent years – squeezed by depressed balance sheets, the financial crisis, and competition from fast-rising new renewables – that does not mean big investors have left the energy market. Pension funds, sovereign wealth funds and many other large money pools are looking for respectable returns with some protection against potential rising prices and interest rates – but at relatively low risk.
